Welcome Letter from Vice Principal Charles

Dear Faculty, Staff, and Parents,

I hope this message finds you well and that you're enjoying the start of summer!

My name is Denise Charles, and I am honored to introduce myself as the new Assistant Principal at The Obama School. It is a true privilege to join such an accomplished and dedicated school community—one that is known for its commitment to academic excellence, student growth, and fostering a warm, supportive environment.

My journey in education began over 20 years ago first in New York and then in Connecticut. Throughout my career, I have had the opportunity to serve in a variety of roles across both elementary and high school settings—as a teacher, mentor, coach, and instructional leader. Each experience has deepened my belief in the power of collaboration and the importance of building strong, trusting relationships with students, families, and colleagues.

What I love most about this work is the opportunity to partner with teachers and families, — because I know that when we work together, we create the strongest foundation for our students to succeed. I’m committed to building open, trusting partnerships with families and to being a visible, approachable presence in our school.

I’m sincerely looking forward to getting to know each of you and working alongside Miss Baker to ensure that Barack H. Obama Magnet University School continues to be a place where every child feels seen, supported, and inspired to learn. I believe that when educators work together with purpose and passion, we create the best possible outcomes for our students.

Please know that my door is always open—I welcome your ideas, your feedback, and the opportunity to partner with you in this meaningful work.

With gratitude and excitement,

Denise Charles Assistant Principal Barack H. Obama Magnet University School

Empowering Our Girl Scholars: A Day of Leadership and Support

 Collage.png

We are absolutely thrilled to share a truly wonderful and inspiring event that recently graced our school! It was a very special occasion where we witnessed our girl scholars shine, thanks to the incredible generosity and wisdom of a remarkable community member.

Our girl scholars had a fantastic time, not just learning, but truly engaging and enjoying every moment. They were captivated by lessons on leadership, discovering what it means to be strong, confident individuals. We loved seeing their enthusiasm as they danced, participated, and truly embraced the empowering atmosphere. It was a joy to watch them blossom, exploring their voices and the qualities that will help them lead and inspire others.

What made this day even more profound and touching was how our guest also thoughtfully addressed parenting essentials. This offered valuable insights and guidance, reminding us all of the vital role we play in nurturing our children. It was a beautiful underscore of the powerful partnership between home and school in raising confident, capable young women ready to embrace their potential.

We extend our sincerest gratitude to everyone involved in creating such an empowering and enriching atmosphere for our entire school community, especially Mrs. D. Moments like these truly highlight our shared commitment to fostering well-rounded individuals and future leaders.

SBA- 3RD AND 4TH GRADE PARENTS

Here is the entire presentation and ways to help your scholar prepare...

We wanted to extend our heartfelt thanks for your participation in our SBA meeting this morning. Your involvement and dedication play a crucial role in the academic success of our students, and we are grateful to have such supportive parents in our community. During our meeting, we discussed essential aspects of the assessment process, including strategies to support your child and resources available to help them succeed. We understand that navigating these assessments can be challenging, and we are committed to providing you with the tools and information you need. To that end, we have included the entire presentation from this morning's meeting, which covers all the essential points and strategies we discussed. Additionally, we've prepared some practice items tailored to help your child prepare for the actual assessment. This practice work is designed to reinforce their understanding and boost their confidence as they approach their exams. Celebrating Success: A Memorable Attendance Breakfast

 IMG_1338.JPG

I'm thrilled to share a recent highlight from our school community! On March 28th, we ended the week on an incredibly positive note with our much-anticipated Attendance Breakfast. Nearly 200 families joined us, making the event a tremendous success and a reflection of the strong bonds within our school community.

The atmosphere was filled with warmth, laughter, and plenty of delicious food! Our guests enjoyed a hearty breakfast spread, and it was wonderful to see families connecting and sharing moments together. The food and the company made the event truly special.

We also achieved a new milestone—completing the highest number of family surveys to date! This accomplishment speaks to the dedication and enthusiasm of our families, staff, and students. It’s a powerful reminder that small achievements can create a ripple effect, leading to larger victories that strengthen our school culture.

Events like this reinforce the importance of building connections and fostering open communication. Thank you to everyone who attended, participated, and made this event unforgettable. Let’s continue working together to make every moment count!

First Graders Dance into New Adventures with New Haven Ballet At Barack Obama Magnet University School

IMG 7344 1IMG 7345 1

We believe in nurturing creativity and imagination in students from an early age. That's why we partnered with the renowned New Haven Ballet to provide our first graders with an unforgettable artistic experience. For the past few weeks, our students have been stepping, twirling, and leaping under the guidance of a trained ballet professional, discovering the joy and discipline of dance. The program began with introducing our young learners to the fundamental principles of ballet, emphasizing the importance of posture, balance, and coordination. The New Haven Ballet instructor brings years of experience and a unique ability to connect with children, making the basics of ballet not only accessible but exhilarating. Every lesson is designed to accommodate all levels, focusing on developing the physical and cognitive skills that come through dance. Through the program, students learn: - Basic ballet terminology and positions - Simple routines that encourage memory and sequencing - The importance of teamwork and synchronization - Physical coordination and flexibility As they glide across the classroom, these young dancers are building more than just artistic skills—they're gaining confidence and learning to work together in harmony, valuable skills that transcend beyond the dance floor. At Obama, we’re proud to offer such enriched extracurricular programs that broaden our students' experiences and enhance their development. Dance is just the beginning; through partnerships like these, the possibilities are truly endless. Stay tuned for more stories about how our students are discovering their passions through incredible programs like this one!
